When I was 15 and very new to the internet (everybody was), I used to sneak out of bed at 4 am to sign onto AOL and join the Boingo chatroom. The modem back then was one of those stupidly loud fax-machine sounding dial up contraptions, and to avoid being caught I'd wrap it up in towels and shirts to muffle the noise.

I don't know why I just remembered that.

LOL, I remember those days!

Eventually I learned you could set your modem volume to 0 for AOL sign-on, at least on Macs. Never had to worry about it again!

Back in dial up days I had absolutely no understanding of why one would want to get on the internet. I didnt realize that search engines existed :X so I thought everything had to end in .com. So Id type in an interest of mine and then .com and more often then not Id find absolutely nothing :< so I lost interest.

I used to sneak awake at 6am also to play on the computer, though it was just to read various fanfictions..which I still dont let anybody know I read.

Lol! That's great!

I was just reminiscing the other day about how it used to be in the 'old days'. I would have been about 15 too, and our telephone bill itemised everything over ten minutes, so I used to sign on for 8 minutes, then disconnect and reconnect ;) Still go rumbled though!

Ahah! Oh man, I remember our first phonebill from the internet D: that was a fun one to get around. I remember chomping at the bit for it to be 6 PM so I could go online for longer. I just about died and went to heaven when we went onto unlimited access. It was so weird when everything upgraded yet again and left us in a state of being Always Online. I wouldn't even be able to comprehend that back then!

Also omg, your mood icons on your journal are ADORABLE. Where did you get them from? Y'know what irritates the heck outta me? If I'd even CONSIDERED it a month ago, I could be going to the Fair this year. :( It just didn't even occur to me that it would be viable, and now I realise it totally is and it's way too short notice to do anything about it. Sending jealous vibes your way!

It took me ages to get used to broadband! It felt so luxuriant, lol!

Awww, it would have been cool if you could have come to the Fair! I wasn't sure I'd be able to go until a few months ago, which might be why it doesn't feel real yet. I will def take loads of pics though :)

Mood icons are from here: and are downloadable for use :) I love them!

Haha, I did similar things at that age. It's funny to think that in just 10 years surfing the net has changed so drastically. I remember the anxiousness of having a jpeg load and having to wait XD.

I know, right? I was just thinking how the main search engine was Yahoo, and nobody had ANY way of putting video online easily. Youtube just sprouted up from nowhere and has taken over the internet!

I remember those loud modems, they were so awful!

I'm pretty sure I did things like that. Before tabs, how did we hide the slashfic we were reading? ;)

Totally did the exact same thing!

But somehow or other, I found a long impossible-to-read code that I copy-pasted into the modem command when it dialed in. They didn't have it until the 56k modems, but it silenced all the dailing and tone crap. That is the 2nd half of the reason I could never stay awake in algebra class. ;)

I plugged a set of cheap headphones into the old modem. Quietened it right down.
