Jonathan Coulton @ Bristol 09!

I'm fortunate enough to say I've managed to see every one of my favourite bands live. I was lucky (foolish?) enough to go to California twice to see the remains of Oingo Boingo (three times), I coincided that with a chance to catch Weird Al. I've seen They Might Be Giants three times, back when they remembered England exists. Queen are sadly no more, but I've seen 'tribute' acts with Brian May & Roger Taylor performing, and the 'We Will Rock You' stage production, so I think that's about as close as I'm going to get on that one.

I can safely say, however, without a sliver of doubt, that Sunday's gig in Bristol with Jonathan Coulton and Paul & Storm was the best I have ever, ever been to. In terms of atmosphere, fun, laughter and excellent music, it was just absolutely incredible. A Coulton audience is basically the slightly better people you find at a nerd convention. Coulton himself (and Paul & Storm) are obviously happy to be complete geeks themselves. When the spotlights started spinning wildly before pinning their view on Storm, he said 'hello? are you there?' in the singsong voice of a Portal turret. When Coulton started talking about Jaffa Cakes, someone shouted out that, yes, the cake was a lie - a tired meme but one so appropriate that it was funny and perfect. Everything about the night was perfect. I had such an amazing time.

Paul & Storm & JoCo & Me

The Jaffa Cake thing... Jonathan, Paul and Storm are American. As such, a lot of things they find over here thrill and/or scare them. Following their twitters, it was easy to learn that they became obsessed with Irn-Bru and Jaffa Cakes. Of course, this meant that everyone attending their shows gave them copious amounts of Irn-Bru and Jaffa Cakes. They ended up sick of Irn-Bru and Jaffa Cakes.

They're very approachable and hang out after their shows, so I had a plan to give them some Jaffa Cakes, but after Coulton twittered saying to please, please don't give them anymore, I had to think fast. I was lucky enough to find Strawberry Jaffa Cakes. Limited edition! How cool is that?

Annnnd if you skip to 9:00 here you get to see me give them to him! XD I'm such a dork. ((skip to 5:06 if you want an awesome Audience Only 'Still Alive' - like I said, atmosphere was gorgeous!)

He made a big deal about them afterwards - somebody in the front row wanted one, so he opened 'em up (saying "ooh I dunno, these are Mint In Box...") and tried one for himself, stating they were sweeter than regular ones. Later, Paul and Storm came out and Storm tried one, and then grabbed another. By the end of the show they'd finished the box, and we had a short chat about it after the show (I told him that lazenich thought they were gross ;))

Anyway, yeah, it was an amazing show. This guy who put it on youtube was in the front row and I'm so glad he recorded it all. I've spent all day just rewatching it. I can't wait until he comes back.

I'm old enough that I did see Queen live, Freddy Mercury and all, once when I was 16 and again when I was 18. Very cherished memories.

You are so lucky! I would have LOVED to have seen them live. I can only imagine how energetic and genuinely exciting their shows would have been with Freddy in the lead.
